Took the family to the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge and while in the wooded section a Red tailed Hawk crossed in front of us and and sat on a tree branch. I stopped and began to take pictures of the beautiful fella when I heard the distinct screeching of more Hawks coming from behind our vehicle. With no one else around we back up looking in the trees fro the source of the screeching. Suddenly Jessica yells out from the back seat to look on the ground not 10 feet from the jeep and WHOA! Two Hawks going at it. They fought for a good 5 minutes and finally the one with his back to you in the picture won the battle. He appeared to be a second year fledgling with little to no Red in his tail. The other fighter (looking at you) flew off and we saw that it was a male adult Red Tailed Hawk but a bit smaller than the other. I must admit it was exciting and scary at the same time, both Hawks slashing their claws at each other, I didn't see the carcass they were fighting over until the fight was done and thought it might be some blood feud they way they were going at it! Once we saw the winner alone with the carcass we left so he could enjoy the meal. Nature at its finest!
